Desert Hills Memory Care’s Shannon Moore Recipient of Award for Outstanding Department Director

The California Assisted Living Association (CALA) is pleased to announce that Shannon Moore, Wellness Director at Desert Hills Memory Care, a Cascade Living Group community, received the organization’s prestigious Outstanding Department Director award on November 6, 2019 at their Fall Conference & Trade Show in Palm Springs. CALA chooses recipients of these awards based on their commitment to providing outstanding, quality care and service to residents in the communities where they work.

As the wellness director, Shannon Moore hires, supervises, and mentors care associates. Executive director Chantelle Hudson says, “Shannon is a fixture for all the associates in the community. She is someone they can confide in. She works hands-on with the associates to teach them and help them grow.” Moore also serves as a mentor for employees of other Cascade Living Group communities in the region.

Moore also has a direct impact on residents and families. She meets with families regularly to review charts and service plans, and she will often help families care for residents at the end of life. While sitting vigil with a resident, she turned on an iPod and joined him in singing his favorite country songs. This brought him a sense of calm.

Moore grew up in the foster care system. She volunteers for United Peace Officers Against Crime, an organization that provides camps for children who are in foster care. She says she gives back to this organization because, “I want these kids to know that I have been where they are and not to give up…you can be whatever you want to be.”

Currently, nearly 180,000 Californians are residents in Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities and the need continues to grow. These communities provide residents with the care they need to perform activities of daily living, medication management, social activities, housekeeping, meals, and transportation; some communities also offer dementia care programs and health-related services. A 2016 study commissioned by CALA showed that staff has a positive impact on residents’ quality of life. Ninety-eight percent of residents say the staff members in their communities are friendly and 94 percent say they receive the help they need.
