Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU), a not-for-profit financial institution, and The Foundation of VCCU, a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide financial assistance and education to the local community, are collecting monetary donations for Ventura County FOOD Share’s fifth annual CAN-tree Collection food drive.
For the CAN-tree Collection, individuals, organizations and businesses collect canned goods or “buy and build” by sending funds directly to FOOD Share to purchase the cans. Then, these individuals and businesses come together on Dec. 2-4 at The Collection at Riverpark in Oxnard to stack the cans into a display of holiday-themed Christmas trees. VCCU’s goal this year is to raise $15,000 to build 30 CAN-trees — consisting of 15,000 cans. When the event is completed, FOOD Share will distribute the donated cans to food pantries that service 74,500 Ventura County residents who are food insecure during the holidays.
In preparation for this year’s CAN-tree event, VCCU and The Foundation will be collecting monetary donations at VCCU’s branches. All funds raised during this campaign will go directly to FOOD Share. FOOD Share is able to turn every $1 collected into $5 worth of food. In addition to monetary contributions, VCCU members can donate nonperishable food items at its seven branch locations where collection points are available.
“This event embodies the best of charitable giving,” said Joe Schroeder, CEO of VCCU and board president of FOOD Share. “I have personally challenged VCCU employees for donations, and will match up to $2,500. The CAN-tree Collection brings our community together, and on behalf VCCU and myself, we are looking forward to supporting such a worthy cause again this holiday season.”
According to FOOD Share’s CAN-tree building instructions, each tree requires approximately 600-800 cans to complete. At last year’s drive, VCCU built 29 trees, equaling out $14,500 in value, providing roughly 14,500 cans to support FOOD Share’s efforts.
